During the same period brands started to come to the forefront with the first brand named Quaker Oats. This was because goods produced by brands started gaining acceptability.

Organizations realized the importance of safeguarding their brand name and by 1870 laws that were made at the federal level that regulated trademarks came into existence. New ideas of promoting products such as the use of containers that were shaped as log cabins were being used to package the Log Cabin Syrup.

After the period of the Civil War, gender roles were realized as men started earning money and women stayed at home and women started deciding what and why to buy while men paid for the purchases.

Advertising messages started becoming friendlier and this was recognized as the change in selling procedure from hard to soft sell. Copywriters such as John Powers started using honesty in their advertisements (O'Guinn, 84).

Since there was a ban on using pictures in newspapers, organizations created slogans for their products and repeatedly played them or displayed them. In 1884, the development of flexible films allowed every individual to take pictures.

The very first advertisement that was colorful came into existence during 1893 and motifs of the healthy baby gained immense popularity. Artists started creating photo adverts such as Jesse Smith who created ads for Kodak.

Advertisements started becoming biased as in most of the ads the people belonging to the African American society were displayed performing low-paying jobs. Those belonging to the Asian race were depicted as poisonous for rats to advertise rat killing poison.

Products started selling throughout the nation with the help of advertisements and one of the industries that heavily advertised was the soap manufacturing industry. During this period, Coca-Cola was being sold as a fountain-based beverage.

Advertisements that were exhibited in departmental stores encouraged customers to purchase goods that they previously did not buy. The prices of goods started becoming expensive with the sale of bicycles at $100.

Various advertising agencies such as the George Batten Company came into existence and for the first time, an advertising magazine was transformed into women-based journals such as the Ladies Home Journal.

New technology allowed individuals to come up with new designs such as the Victorian style that was developed by William Morris and by the 1890s the Americans even started creating new designs (Welsh 62).
