Critically discuss and analyse motivation in the workplace Communication is one most essential skill which made human beings distinct amongst the animals. Our ability to think and communicate has brought progress in the world. In today’s world of competence, leadership is the most important aspect. All organization weather it is large or small, public or private sector needs strong and competent leaders to succeed. And effective communication is one of the most important components of leadership.

Communication is a human skill whose importance is accentuated by orga­nizational size, social cleavages, and network structures. Many of us wait for weekends and holidays to enjoy. The typical work environment has become one in which many of us feel that no one appears to really care, and no acknowledgement takes place. Errors and mistakes provoke attack, derision and reprimand, while correct and even excellent performance goes seemingly unnoticed and unappreciated. Risk taking and creativity are inhibited, distrust increases, communication is suppressed, attorneys complain that staff members arent motivated, and we express our natural enthusiasm on the weekend in recreational activities, in tennis or in community service.

Let us now take an example the football world series. The winning teams eluded an air of celebration and unstoppability. The players pull together despite their individual positions on the field. They seem to genuinely care about one another, and they seem able to include and resolve their personal differences. Is it possible to bring in such kind of motivation in the workplace? It is essential to create such an environment in the work place because in most of the organizations it is the team work and their performance that matters more than individual performances.

Good communication is the key to success and is a motivation of team members. This means that if you are leading a large organization you must check that the processes for managing, communicating and developing people are in place and working properly (Chapman, 1995). Probably no other skill is as vital as communication skills in the world of the supervisor or manager. Effective communication is the most critical element of successful supervision and leadership.  Building relationships with the team members at all levels of the organization is the key to a supervisor or manager’s success and to both personal productivity and organizational effectiveness.

When communications are good, information flows smoothly, delivering clear messages that people can easily understand and act on. When it is not, confusion leads to misunderstanding, inaction or wrong actions (FMLink Group, 2001). A message is clear when it is easy for the receiver to understand and interpret, and it is complete when it contains all the information that the sender and receiver need to reach a common understanding. In striving to send messages that are both clear and complete, supervisors or managers must learn to anticipate how receivers will interpret messages and to adjust messages to eliminate sources of misunderstanding.

Feedback is essential for effective communication. Supervisors or managers should build a feedback mechanism into the messages they send, either including a request for feedback or indicating when and how they will follow up on a message to make sure that it was understood. When supervisors send written messages, they can request that the receiver respond in a letter, memo or fax; schedule a meeting to discuss the issue; or to follow up with a phone call. By building feedback mechanisms such as these into their messages, supervisors ensure that they are heard and understood (FMLink Group, 2001).

Hence it can be concluded that open and direct communication between staff that is worker focused - sets agreed specific and attainable goals and encourages intrinsic motivation. Our motivation and commitment to work is a reflection of extrinsic and intrinsic factors.
